Women’s Day Message by Viral Desai, CEO – Zenitex

Ode to Women on Womens Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated the world over, every year on the 8th day of March. It celebrates womanhood and pays tribute to the indomitable spirit of women across the globe.

The 2016 theme for International Women’s Day is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”. The United Nations is encouraging the world to envision a world where women and girls can have the freedom and ease of choice to participate in politics, get an education, have an income, and — an area I hold dear to my heart — live in a society free from violence and discrimination.

The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries it has the same status as of Mother’s Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

Investing in Women is Ensuring Prosperity :
When you empower a woman, you elevate her community. This is the core concept behind many of the public diplomacy efforts: a ripple effect occurs when we believe in women and invest in their potential. By providing women entrepreneurs access to training, mentors, and networks, we directly supports the goals of advancing women’s efforts to become financially independent through entrepreneurship and utilize their economic strength to improve their communities around the world.

Every day, we read about women and girls around the world who are victims of heinous violence. From Iraqi women abducted and enslaved by ISIS to Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped and forced into marriage to a Girl Students in India gang raped and tortured to death, these tragedies seem to belong to medieval times. We should remember that even they are somebody’s daughter, sister, wife or mother and it can be anybody.

I’d like to propose a different headline, a different narrative. While their work may not always make the front pages, women are confronting our most pressing global issues. At great personal risk, they are fighting poverty, discrimination, and violence so that their families, communities, and countries can have better lives.

As an entrepreneur I see the power of women every day in every place that I visit – they are creating opportunities for the next generations of women.

On Women’s day I pay my tributes to Women around the world and in India who work to advance peace, security, and gender equality. And their individual stories represent the positive impact that empowered women can make everywhere.

So, we will not retreat in the face of those who seek to diminish or banish women and girls to the margins of society. We do not accept rape as a by-product of conflict or indifferences. We will not accept the forced marriage of girls as a social norm. And we will not forget those who have been or are being held against their will. Instead, we honour them for the courage they show in the face of brutality and intimidation.

In February, World Bank had asked in a poll what do you wish for International Women’s Day? Answers were 42% want to see gender equality. 31% said they wanted women’s empowerment, and 27% wished for women’s human rights.

I think all three issues are critical — primarily because they can’t stand alone. A woman with rights is one who feels empowered to compete in an equal world.

As Gandhiji said : “Intellectually, mentally, and spiritually, a woman is equivalent to a man and she can participate in every activity”.

In Modern Indian society women are playing stellar roles. More importantly their role in family building, society development is stupendous. Indian woman is emerging out of their conventional role, realizing their unlimited potential and have begun to take major role in all walks of life. If India is to be a superpower, then surely we need a significant contribution from these great women.

I personally feel that a woman is intelligent, understanding, beautiful, gentle, motherly and powerful. What can be more powerful than Nature and hence, even Nature is lovingly addressed as Mother Nature. Because it is a Woman who brings life. She is the chosen one by the creator to bring life in to this world.
